Farming Skills, Seed Saving, and Community Connection in the First Six Weeks

The first month and a half of the season has been off to a vibrant and inspiring start as we welcomed this year’s fellows into the program. We began with a meaningful sun catcher building ceremony, special thanks to Linda, Rudy Lozito’s mom, for generously sharing her time, space, and stories with us.

Since then, the days have been filled with hands-on learning, community connection, and exciting field trips. Here’s a look at what we’ve accomplished so far:

So far we’ve been busy with…

  • Tool Safety & Farming Ergonomics: Fellows learned essential skills for working safely and effectively with farm tools.
  • Seed Starting and Transplanting: Weekly greenhouse days provided participants with practical experience in starting seeds and nurturing transplants.
  • Soil Work & Planting: We prepped garden beds, directly seeded radishes using a precision seeder, transplanted beets, and planted a variety of summer fruiting crops.
  • Seed Saving with Rana Sana: An engaging session on the importance of preserving and saving seeds.
  • Working with Dahlia Bulbs: Fellows learned to handle and plant dahlia bulbs, appreciating both their beauty and growing needs.
  • Weather vs. Climate: We explored the differences between weather and climate, and examined the impacts of industrial agriculture on our global systems.

From Farm to Table

Our first cooking demonstration was a true highlight, showcasing a fragrant sweet potato and coconut milk curry prepared with freshly harvested kale and cilantro from the farm. The event offered a delicious and enriching experience, celebrating the full journey of food from soil to plate.

Building Community Connections

We’ve also ventured off the farm to visit two of our amazing partner sites, Urban Edge and Pollinate Farms. A big thank-you to both farms for welcoming us and sharing their knowledge and practices.
