After School at the Farm Program
After School at the Farm is a nature-based education program held at the North Richmond Farm, designed for families and students in Pre-K through 5th grade. Our program is open to a wide age range, ensuring accessibility for as many Richmond & San Pablo participants as possible. The program is hosted on Wednesdays from 3:30–5:00 pm, aligning with WCCUSD Minimum Days to ensure accessibility and convenience for local families.
Children under 6 must be accompanied by a guardian who is at least 18 years old. This ensures a safe and supportive environment for all participants.

What We Do & Why
The After School at the Farm program was created to give children and families in Richmond and San Pablo a safe, welcoming space to spend time outdoors, connect with nature, and learn during the busy school year. Many local residents lack access to educational outdoor environments, and this program helps bridge that gap by offering hands-on agricultural activities, team-building games, creative art, and nutritious snacks.
At its core, the program promotes environmental literacy, teaching youth how their choices and actions impact the natural world. We emphasize a sense of belonging in nature, showing children and families that they are not separate from the environment but an active part of it. Through creative learning, we weave art, play, and exploration into every lesson to make the experience both joyful and educational.
At the heart of the program, our goals are to:
- Provide a safe, fun, and engaging outdoor learning space for children.
- Engage Richmond residents in educational, nature-based activities.
- Increase agricultural knowledge and skills.
By centering environmental literacy and empowerment through education, this program ties directly into Urban Tilth’s mission to inspire, hire, and train local residents to cultivate agriculture, feed the community, and restore relationships to the land, ultimately building a healthier and more just food system.
