Spring is just around the corner, and with it comes new growth, fresh energy, and exciting possibilities in the garden. March is a great time to start preparing garden beds and planting cool-season crops that thrive in Richmond’s climate.
This month, gardeners can begin planting:
- Leafy greens like lettuce, spinach, and arugula
- Peas and green onions
- Herbs such as cilantro, parsley, and dill
- Strawberries and early root vegetables
Now is also the time to refresh soil with compost, check irrigation, and plan for warmer weather crops like tomatoes, peppers, and squash.
At the Greenway, we see spring planting as a reminder of resilience and hope. Each seed planted represents nourishment for our families and a step toward food sovereignty. Whether you’re a seasoned gardener or just starting out, remember that gardens don’t have to be perfect, they just need care, patience, and love.
Garden Tip: Start small. Even one raised bed, container, or shared plot can produce fresh, healthy food. Did you know you can sign up to receive updates about our Free Nursery Stands? They’re open to community members Monday through Thursday, from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM, on a first come, first served basis. Inventory is limited and not guaranteed.
