Dr. King’s Legacy in Action

19th Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service on the Richmond Greenway

For nearly two decades, our community has come together to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy by taking action to advance racial equity, justice, and community empowerment, while standing firmly against all forms of discrimination.

The 19th Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service on the Richmond Greenway was a powerful day of action, reflection, and collective healing. Rooted in Dr. King’s vision of justice, dignity, and beloved community, the event transformed public land into a living example of what is possible when people come together with shared purpose.

More than a day of service, it was a call to action. The day reminded participants that equity is built through consistent care for the land, for people, for one another, and for future generations.

A Legacy That Feels Urgent

Dr. King taught us that “true peace is not merely the absence of tension, but the presence of justice.” In recent years, that teaching has felt more urgent than ever.

Our community, like many across the nation, has endured moments of fear, uncertainty, and exhaustion. Residents continue to face increasing challenges related to access to resources, environmental health, displacement, and the erosion of fundamental rights. For many families, these have been tense years marked by concern for safety, belonging, and dignity.

The Greenway as Refuge and Renewal

Against this backdrop, the Richmond Greenway has emerged as more than a physical space. It has become a place of refuge, resistance, and renewal.

The 19th Annual MLK Day of Service offered a moment to breathe, to gather outdoors, and to reclaim joy and power in community. It reminded participants that even in difficult times, coming together in shared public spaces is an act of courage, care, and hope.

One of the most moving moments of the day came as longtime Richmond leaders Joe Fisher and Angela Cox stood among the community they have served for decades. Their presence carried history, resilience, and love.

Through years of tireless work, they have uplifted countless lives while advancing justice, equity, and unity in Richmond. In that moment, Dr. King’s legacy felt vividly alive, embodied through leaders who have never stopped showing up for their people.

Putting Values Into Practice

Through hands on service and intentional programming, the event embodied Dr. King’s legacy by:

  • Reclaiming and activating land as a shared community resource
  • Creating spaces for connection across cultures, generations, and lived experiences
  • Centering equity, access, and care for historically underserved communities

The day served as a reminder that honoring Dr. King’s legacy means more than remembering his words. It means living them, together, in the places we call home.
