Caring for the Creeks and Community Spaces that Connect Us

Our Watershed Restoration Field Crew has been clearing grass and invasive plants from creek channels to allow water to flow more freely. Along Albany Hill, the crew tackled ivy spreading across the hillside, giving native plants like blackberry, bee plant, and wild rose the space to thrive. At San Pablo Creek, they pruned fallen trees and brush to open new planting sites.

The crew also harvested medicinal native plants for salve-making, whose antimicrobial properties have supported healing for generations.

At Unity Park, we cared for the bioswales by picking up trash and sheet mulching to create a cleaner, more welcoming space for our neighbors. We also partnered with students from Shield Reid in North Richmond to bring new life into this community space.

Because creek health is community health, the team has been monitoring aquatic macroinvertebrates, tiny creatures whose presence, or absence, reveals just how healthy the water really is.
