At North Richmond Farm, a small but powerful resource is helping gardens grow across Contra Costa County. The farm’s Free Nursery Stand provides fruit, vegetable, herb, and flower starts to community members, school gardens, and local organizations working to cultivate green spaces and expand access to fresh food.
The plants begin with the careful work of Urban Tilth’s dedicated farm crew, who sow seeds, nurture seedlings, and prepare them to thrive once they leave the farm. From there, the seedlings join the larger community through individual donations and contributions to schools, such as the garden at Mira Vista School, where students use them to cultivate hands-on learning opportunities and vibrant garden spaces.
Even in its current size, the nursery stand supports a wide range of gardens and families across the county. With the completion of the farm greenhouse, Urban Tilth will be able to grow more seedlings and expand the reach of this program, serving more gardens, students, and families while continuing to foster stronger connections between people and the land.
