After School at the Farm returned this season at North Richmond Farm, offering a nature-based learning space for Pre-K through 5th grade students and their families. Held on Wednesdays from February through March and aligned with WCCUSD minimum days, the program creates a consistent opportunity for young people to spend time outdoors during the school year.
The program is designed to provide a safe, welcoming environment where children can explore the farm through hands-on agricultural activities, creative art projects, games, and shared snacks. By centering experiential learning, participants build practical skills while developing curiosity and confidence in outdoor spaces.
After School at the Farm was created to address the limited access many Richmond and San Pablo families have to outdoor educational environments. By bringing youth onto the land in a supportive setting, the program helps bridge this gap while strengthening connections between families, community, and the local food system.
Environmental literacy is a central focus of the program. Activities introduce participants to agricultural practices and the ecological relationships that sustain healthy food systems, while encouraging young people to reflect on how their choices and actions impact the natural world. Through art, play, and exploration, lessons are designed to make learning both engaging and meaningful.
By helping youth see themselves as part of the ecosystems they interact with, After School at the Farm nurtures a sense of belonging in nature while building agricultural knowledge and community connection.
