Water Protectors, pumpkins and falling leaves…

Verde K-8th school has been welcoming the fall. The pumpkins are turning orange, the leaves are falling, and we are eating apples every day. We have been planting more greens like collards and cilantro.

So far 5th, 6th, and 8th grades made apple crisps! When we harvested the apples we began learning about solidarity and farmworker justice, through the history of how Filipino and Mexican farmworkers in California led the Delano grape strike.

With the younger ages, we have been wrapping up our water unit by learning about water protectors, reading the wonderfully illustrated book. On the days when it gets really hot, we are grateful to have the grapevine shade and also the huge coast live oak that keeps it fresh.
