Members of Scouting America (formerly known as the Boy Scouts), Berkeley Troop 24, recently partnered with Urban Tilth to bring a fresh wave of improvements to the North Richmond Farm. Led by Eagle Scout candidate Kyle Chien, the troop spent the weekend constructing a new Weigh Station for the orchard’s you-pick-it program and building planter boxes to brighten the welcome area at the Farm Office Trailer.
These projects truly represent the culmination of the Eagle Scout journey. To earn the rank, candidates must design, plan, and fundraise for a community service project, as well as gather materials and guide their troop through the work. The process not only benefits the community but also highlights the leadership, organization, and problem-solving skills required of every Eagle Scout. Each project helps Scouts advance in their personal journeys while also creating lasting infrastructure and resources that are meant to be shared and enjoyed by the community.
Scouting America emphasizes hands-on learning, service, and leadership development. Scouts are encouraged to take on projects that address real community needs, whether it is building infrastructure, restoring natural habitats, or improving public spaces. The aim is to prepare young people for lives of purpose and impact by teaching them how to identify challenges, collaborate with others, and leave a meaningful contribution.
With its recent renaming to Scouting America to reflect its inclusive membership, the organization continues to uphold its mission of helping youth, girls and boys alike, develop resilience, character, and a lifelong commitment to service. Projects like this one at the North Richmond Farm are a reminder of how Scouting helps young leaders grow while giving back in ways that strengthen local communities.
Urban Tilth is deeply grateful for the energy, creativity, and commitment Troop 24 brought to the North Richmond Farm. We thank the Scouts, their families, and their leaders for their dedication, and we welcome every opportunity to partner with these young leaders as they continue to grow in service and purpose.
