Building Community: Eagle Scouts Enhance North Richmond Farm with Lasting Projects

In the heart of North Richmond, two Eagle Scout candidates, Felix Badde and Casey Suppiger, undertook transformative projects at the local farm, leaving a lasting mark on both the landscape and community spirit.

Felix Badde’s Shade Structure

Felix Badde, from Albany Troop 14, embarked on a mission to enhance the functionality of the North Richmond Farm by constructing a much-needed shade structure. The project commenced with meticulous planning and design, aiming to provide shelter adjacent to the farm’s program offices.

The structure, crafted over a spirited weekend in October, features a sloped corrugated roof elegantly supported by a sturdy redwood frame. Anchored in concrete pier foundations, the structure not only offers respite from the sun but also serves as a testament to Felix’s leadership and organizational prowess. His initiative extended beyond the drawing board; he raised funds, procured materials, and rallied fellow scouts to join in the construction efforts. The result is not just a physical addition but a symbol of community unity and dedication to agricultural sustainability.

Casey Suppiger’s Outdoor Chicken Run

Across the farm, Casey Suppiger, representing Lafayette Troop 224, envisioned a project that would enrich the farm experience for local children: an outdoor chicken run. This endeavor aimed to create a safe and interactive space adjacent to the existing chicken coop, where program participants could engage directly with farm life.

Casey’s project, spanning two weekends in January, involved intricate planning to seamlessly integrate the new structure with the farm’s layout. The outdoor area, enclosed by a wire mesh fence supported by redwood framing and anchored into concrete pier foundations and a nearby retaining wall, was meticulously designed to align with walking paths and the existing coop. His attention to detail and commitment to community engagement shone through as he navigated the complexities of material procurement and construction logistics with his scout comrades.

Impact on the Community

These Eagle Scout projects not only beautified the North Richmond Farm but also exemplified the Boy Scouts’ commitment to community service and environmental stewardship. By spearheading these initiatives, Felix and Casey not only fulfilled the requirements for Eagle Scout rank but also left a legacy of compassion and practicality within the community. Their efforts have fostered a deeper connection between local youth and agricultural practices, promoting sustainability and educational opportunities for generations to come.

As we admire the shade structure’s silhouette against the California sky and watch children interact joyfully within the chicken run, we celebrate the spirit of volunteerism and leadership embodied by Felix Badde and Casey Suppiger. Their stories remind us that small actions, fueled by passion and collaboration, can create enduring impacts on our neighborhoods and inspire future generations to contribute to the welfare of our communities.

In the spirit of these projects, let us continue to nurture our environments and empower our youth to lead with purpose and dedication, guided by the principles of scouting and the values of community service.
