Bioswales, Creek Tests, and Yard Transformations

The Watershed crew as been steadfast, work has continued regardless of the weather. The team started by calling in the rain with a celebratory dance before diving into their various restoration projects.

Bioswales and Water Quality Testing

Several activities were completed in the restoration projects:

  • Bioswales: By successfully managing the inflow, the team was able to use bioswales to help mitigate flooding and improve water quality, benefiting both the local ecosystem and surrounding communities.
    • FYI – Bioswales are engineered, vegetated channels that help manage stormwater runoff by attenuating and storing water. These natural features are specifically designed to handle a defined volume of water, reducing the impact of excess runoff on the surrounding environment. Essentially, they function as open, planted ditches that slow, filter, and manage water flow. (Source: CRD)
  • San Pablo Creek: Water quality was tested, providing valuable data for future restoration efforts.
  • Rheem Creek: Since its grand opening, the restored creek has been keeping the surrounding neighborhood flood-free, which is a major success for the community.
Building with Repurposed Materials

On Albany Hill, the team focused on:

  • Soil-retaining Wall: Built up with repurposed Eucalyptus to help control erosion and make use of sustainable materials.
  • Poison Oak Removal: Worked alongside the Sogorea Te’ Land team to safely remove Guardian (Poison) Oak.

Transforming a Homeowner’s Yard

The team also had the opportunity to work on a homeowners yard!

  • Laundry-to-Landscape System: The Laundry-to-Landscape System was installed as part of the Transformative Climate Communities (TCC) Grant, aimed at conserving water for Richmond residents. Furthermore, this system diverts water from the washing machine to irrigate landscaping, providing an eco-friendly solution for water conservation.
  • Native Plants: Introduced to enhance the space and promote biodiversity while supporting local ecosystems.

Always learning and always growing, the team continues to make a positive environmental impact, no matter the weather!
