Since passing their farm on to us, different members of the Nabeta family have visited the site to check in, offer support, and see our progress. Satoko Nabeta, the family matriarch, returned for the first time and we are happy to report that she was impressed by all the work that has taken place so far!
The Nabeta family remains an integral part of Urban Tilth’s story as we transform this space while honoring its rich heritage. We’ve also been able to connect the family with artists and historians to help collect, preserve and share the story of Japanese American families catalytic role in agriculture, especially the flower business in North Richmond.
Our intention is to expand the planned History Walk installation through the Nabeta Farm properties to share their family’s story of the flower business and internment with visitors so this history, struggles, and contributions are never forgotten.
