Learning about Richmond’s soil composition!

School Gardens Apprentices this week learned about what soil is made of and Richmond’s soil composition.

Then we learned about seeds and their relationship with soil. We seeded corn, cayenne peppers, zinnias, & snapdragons.

We then learned that when understanding fungi’s contribution to soil biodiversity. soil diversity can help us protect our forests in the face of environmental stresses like climate change and excessive land use.

We then cooked with mushrooms and potatoes & talked about root crops that grow underground. Apprentices collected samples with Ph.D. candidate Cole to analyze the health, nutrients and microbiology of our soil.
