Winter Training: How Orchard For All Apprentices are Cultivating Skills and Community

As the frost settles in, the program apprentices have been busy cultivating their skills in community building, orchard maintenance, and tree care. Over the course of several weeks, they have engaged in hands-on learning experiences that not only enhance their horticultural knowledge but also strengthen connections within their local community.

Week 1: Urban Tilth’s Mission and Richmond’s History

The apprenticeship program began with an exploration of Urban Tilth’s mission, a nonprofit organization dedicated to sustainable urban agriculture. The apprentices also studied Richmond’s rich history, learning about the area’s agricultural roots and the vital role urban green spaces play in the development of the community.

Week 2: Tree Care Essentials and the 7th Annual Tree Giveaway

In Week 2, the focus shifted to tree care basics, providing apprentices with hands-on training in the essentials of tree maintenance. The week ended with the 7th annual tree giveaway at Unity Park, where community members were given free trees, promoting a greener, more vibrant Richmond.

Week 3: End-of-Winter Pruning and Spring Preparations

Week 3 saw the apprentices collaborating with local partners, including Greenway Gardens and North Richmond Farm, to tackle end-of-winter pruning. This important task prepared the trees for the upcoming spring blooms, ensuring the orchards’ health and longevity. The week provided an excellent opportunity for apprentices to apply their pruning skills.

Looking Forward

As the winter season continues, the OFA apprentices are eager to continue their learning journey, looking forward to sharing their knowledge and deepening the connections fostered through these hands-on experiences.
